The beauty's in the fabric...
It's labels like these that make me wonder if there really are places that deserve such exquisite design. Introducing Beenas, the leading jalabeeya designer of the UAE.

I like to use this space to unveil treasures I come across, and to sort of informally keep a record of the art and design stemming from North Africa and the Gulf regions. The draping and tailoring in Arabian design like that of Beenas is comparable to that of major designers I've familiarized myself with, and I absolutely looove scanning editorials from the region - so much so, that's almost become an obsession. What are you wearing this fall?
I love the colour pallete designers use during the fall - camel tones, deep reds, burnt orange... looove it.

Is the key to the fall in the boots, bags, and blazers? I'm having the hardest time finding good denim, but that's hardly news. The fun is definetely in the footwear this season. From decals on flats to subtle but charming details on boots, I have started to love shopping for footwear.
When it comes to blazers, well, if you've been following for a while you know that they are my go to piece. I have one by Moon that I wore to work and classes all summer (you read that right, classes all summer!) and it has carried straight into fall - absolutely love them. However... I have my eyes on a gorgeous one I passed while scrolling through a shopping district in the city...

Wrap it up like a turban...

Forever on trend...
Okay, or at least in by books. When it comes to events (I've recently even stressed that to a dinner's night out), the first thing my eyes lay on when I open up my wardrobe are the scarves I have set aside to be wrapped up like a turban. I'm definetely one of those who pins my scarf with what always feels like a lot of loose ends, so to get rid of all the extra fabric once in a while, is so satisfying to me. Not to mention that I love how creatively I can express myself by styling scarves differently, and how fun it is to pick up a vintage scarf or some odd material at a fabric store (when I'm feeling extra creative, usually after a few hours watching Rachel Zoe Project reruns and reading style.com updates). The fact that it has been all over runways for seasons doesn't hurt either (hehe).

Well, with a slogan that reads "guided by your daydreams, sewed for your desires" you had better hope the collections are good! And the caftans designed by Moroccan designer Zineb Lyoubi Idris truly live up to those standards. The designer, with 9 collections under her embroidered belt, really captures what is coined "the morrocan caftan" and then takes it to new limits with her selection of fabrics, colours, and decals. Mini no more...
In case you haven't been keeping up to date with spring's runways, HF would like to remind you that Summer is being good to us - the mini skirt has made it's exit off the runways and what's replaced it? Something a little more HF friendly - the midi skirt.
The what?
You heard me! Not too mini not yet maxi...

The pleated midi, like the Chloe one shown here is my favorite - although I love an a-line midi (would you think I was crazy if I told you I was imagining a black leather a-line midi skirt? Oh how gorgeous...), and the nudes used in the set are a gorgeous way to lighten up all the fabrics for a fresh look for spring. Get creative with your choice of leggings - the legging peering behind the hightop gladiators is a gorgeous way to get some legging in, while the gladiator takes attention away from any calve-protective sisters... and pair the midi with a top - which can really transform the style - as you can see in the outfit above.
A classic watch paired with a leather bracelet always makes for classy arm candy!
Do I sense some disapproval? Well, there's always the maxi... :D And the tips above can really be used for either!

This trend leads to another on trend item: Footwear! As does the jumpsuit - mentioned in a previous post - the midi skirt lets you get creative with spring's footwear! Try it with tall gladiator sandals in the daytime, and some candy coloured leggings - or a pair of gorgeous boots in the evening. The midi skirt is versatile and so on trend that it's been designed in so many styles - allowing you, HF reader, to get creative!

Would you try a jumpsuit?

Ressurection of the Jumpsuit
When you're first exposure to a collection is mediated through what look like pink laser beams shooting out of a female figure, you can already tell one aspect of the collection - think, femme fatal. This was exactly my reaction to fashion label Shrekahnth, and exactly the sensation that surrounds one of this season's greatest, the jumpsuit.

Try it as an alternative to the maxi dress - although a different fit, a celebration of fabric and versatility remain two characteristics of the quintessential spring wardrobe item, but one thing changes - you can play up your footwear, because unlike the maxi, they're not peering behind fabric, but rather, on showcase.

Silk and Simplicity

I was recently contacted to showcase what is probably the newest addition to Abaya design, and I was so impressed with the elegant silhouettes that I couldn't wait for them to make their debut on HF!

The London-based label, designed by Barjis Chohan, previously specializing in interior design and handmade rugs under her company BARJIS, this line of abayas is the first of many. I immediately noticed the feminine form and quality fabrics, the abayas truly exude classic elegance.

Spring/Summer 2011 - Striped

The pattern du jour
If it looks like a tiger, and is fierce like a tiger - it's just Spring 2011. One thing that has transferred from last Spring's shopping list? Stripes. This year, from Vivienne Westwood's whimsical designs to Marc by Marc's candy coloured vacation gowns to Jason Wu's darker spin on the trend, the stripes of Spring 2010 have gone from nautical to wonderful!

HF Suggestions:
- Pair a striped top with trousers and a thin belt for a nautical look. Try purchasing a longer leg, so you can roll leg of the trouser up once or twice for a laid back feel. Oxfords or even a nude/navy flat would work.
- Try a striped maxi (they're everywhere atm) with a cropped cardigan or a jean jacket for the summer
- Even a simple striped bohemian tank with a cardigan and jeans would be an easy transition to take you from Winter to Spring.

When Fashion gives you lemons...
Unless it's a pencil skirt and my wallet spontaneously grows fuller, I don't know that I'd be able to rock Prada's banana prints -although I'll gladly take on the challenge if you fund it ;) - or whether or not Zac Posen's Pinapple creations would compete with my own eye makeup, one thing's for sure - this season is full of fruity creativity!
And I love it.
A HF tip for this season? Don't be scared of a print - in fact, have some fun with that extra fabric we sometimes dread as the heat sets in!

Pair a printed mini with a cardigan that hits at the same length -so as not to cut yourself up, carry the print out in a clutch for everyday errands, in a ballet flats for class, or even a blouse. Be daring. It might just be the cherry on top for your wardrobe!

Spring 2011 - Draping
What's a better purchase for a girl in hijab than a top that does all the work for you? Draped tunics, and jersey wrap dresses this season are perfect for any figure this spring. The draping effect does not only scream gorgeous tailoring but the figure forgiving fabric is perfect after a long winter away from the gym... (ahem, am I the only one?)

Easily adaptable from a work day to an evening out, accessories can transform the outfit. Long necklaces, bracelets (wooden to gold), a clutch? A purse? Flats or pumps? The possibilities are endless.

Try the look with a pair of straight jeans and flats or take the opportunity to bring those flared jeans out from the back of your closet and pair them with some gorgeous pumps.

Between fall's military inspired looks, and spring's pastels, winter seems to be very limiting, so it may come as a surprise that it is anything but. Accessory possibilities are limitless, and as spring teases us with it's arrival with slushy streets and glimpses of the grass on front lawns, you can find me at the mall grabbing the last of Winter's accessories.

Studded belts have been my choice for the season - to add a little more edge to that puffy parka!

A Little Sparkle, a Little Shine - Jawaher Collection

Swarovski Elements Jawaher collection, celebrating the beauty of the Arabian woman.
I've recently been contacted to showcase this collection on HF,and I have to say - I am in LOVE! The Jawaher Collection, by Swarovski Elements is "the latest initiative for the fashion connoisseur in the Middle East.. using crystal as a creative material to show a light fueled allure". The exhibition took place in London in late October and ran until November 1st.

The collection communicates the sheer elegance,class - and love for bling - depictive of the fashion scene of the Gulf. The jewlery is beautiful, the photos - inspirational, and the initiative is not only encouraging to a hijabi fashion blogger like myself, but so pleasing as the prominence of fashion in the arab world expands and is recognized.

Bed-Head!

Because every fashionista's got a bed to match!
At the end of a day of classes or catching up with friends, returning to your personal space is always a relief. I know how it feels to walk into a room run amok - magazines everywhere, lampshade awry, bed sheets hanging over the frame of my bed, and only half of my wardrobe hung up where it's supposed to be - All evidence of a frazzled me who woke up an hour later than planned the night before.

It takes all the motivation i've ever known to get me to clean up after myself, so i've come up with a trick over the years; re-arranging furniture. I've heard it's a libra thing - not that I believe it- but rearranging your furniture is the equivalent of pressing the refresh button on your computer screen - immediate renewal.

Recently, I've found myself looking at furniture and bed sets, and I've found the perfect site with hundreds of options and a ton of eye candy; Bedroomfurniture.com (the link above).

"The scarf can be a tool of empowerment"

Providing the latest is an important part of what HijabiFashionista is about. Providing inspiration, and links for hijabis worldwide - to eliminate that 'what to wear' factor for women in hijab. I've recently been contacted by 16R, and I have a few things to show from my visit to their online home: SixteenR.com

Their philosophy expresses the role of a scarf as an item that inspires transformation that "defin[es] itself as a sign of beauty and strength, not a sign of oppression and dependence" as the 'modern Muslim woman' has the possibility of defining her own style by "incorporating fashion from the west while respecting traditions from generations before".

I've seen and reviewed many fashion lines related to modesty and/or hijab, and the gallery at 16R is a favorite of mine. The interesting styling and quirky screen prints on their scarves are so creative. Not to mention the models from an array of places like Thailand, Bangledesh, and Peru! A must-see for sure!

Cardigan-Free Tops you'll Love!
Whether it's a casual event or a formal one, pairing EVERY top you own with a cardigan sometimes looks a tad cumbersome. How about trying a few longer in length and longer sleeved tops that you don't have to wear under something. That's it! Easy and chic!

The following are a few of my pics from Asos.com because they deliver nearly everywhere to suit my diverse readers. These versatile finds can be worn for Eid, and then throughout the year! Plus if you're thinking of ordering from anywhere online, it's time to do that now so you'll have an outfit ready for Eid!

I picked these especially for their non-restrictive material, their gorgeous cuts, chic designs and the fact that they can be worn with jeans or pants without looking like the two aren't meant for each other; you know what I'm talking about!

This linen mini is a great piece for an event surrounding Eid! The gorgeous burnt orange suits all skin tones and the a-line cut makes jeans or pants a perfect match! If you're thinking anything other than straight-leg, go for some heels as well to elongate the leg so the length of the top doesn't cut you too short!

This floral motif on black is a perfect addition to your fall wardrobe! Pair it with a bangle (as styled), a hijab in an olive, beige, or rose tone, some dark denim or your favorite pant and you're ready for an event of any kind!

Leopard, Leather, Boots, and bags!

A few easy ways to transform your wardrobe for the fall!
Isn't that the rub? Once you have your summer wardrobe in place, and you've finally learned how to tie your scarf back, or you've just found the perfect white trousers you've been searching for, or perhaps you finally decided on a pair of gladiators... And then you hear it. The weatherman announces temperatures are dropping, those around you have started layering, and you look to your wardrobe in dismay and find nothing but a perfect (and perfectly useless) summer wardrobe.

Well ladies, it's time; To be faster than fashion.
Whaaaaaaaaaat? I know! I've gone crazy! But seriously. Let's do this.

A few easy tips:
1. Whether you're a long time fan, or never felt you could rock it - fall 2010 is growling your name! Insert a dash of leopard print in your outfits. That white tunic you purchased this summer? Pair it with dark denim, and cinch it with a thin leopard print belt. Be bold with a leopard printed bag, add just a dash in a ring or bangle, do it in a scarf. There are so many options..Leather gloves with leopard inserts, anyone?

2. Pull out that tan pea coat you bought a seasons back, and rock it. Purchase some tan trousers, belts or boots! Embrace that camel coloured hue this season!

3. The most important fall accessories this season is footwear and bags! If you haven't put thought into it yet, you'd better start! Once Ramadan's over, the hunt will begin...

HF Label to Watch: Glow Boutique

We all know it's coming around the corner. Although I'm a tad nervous fasting and working the long days of the summer, I can't help but feel excited as the beautiful month of Ramadan quickly approaches. I've spent a few Eids whilst travelling to Muslim countries. I spent one in Libya a while back, and one in Oman more recently. The feeling of community and celebration is so much more present in Muslim countries, especially coming from a smaller city in Canada, the Ramadan vibe is not very prevalent and one will only feel it as much as they induce it. As many more Ramadan inspired posts will come, I'd like to introduce a label I've recently come across - Glow Boutique. The designs are undoubtedly unique, and their collections, prepared for every Ramadan since 2008, are sure to add some middle eastern vibe to any event or any Ramadan regardless of where you are when you treat yourself to one of these dresses in celebration for the season.

On Trend: Wooden Accessories, Bright Colors, and Jean Jackets

I was walking out of one of my favorite cafes that sells freshly squeezed drinks making you feel like the most organic and healthy you've ever felt, when I noticed another walking into the store. It's this downtown crew that I like to watch. Did that sound odd? Haha, but honestly, there are just places in every city where the people around have great sense of style, or even just an interesting one. This particular customer did. It was just well put together, bright, and worked so well in that moment in time as my lips were still moist from the freshly squeezed blend of veggies and fruits, in front of such a fresh place, in her bright outfit. And I thought to myself, how can I capture that in an outfit for myself in hijab?

This is what I came up with:

I'm all about coral, so a fresh face with a subtle coral lip like the christian dior lipstick I chose to use here is perfect, although Joe Fresh has a collection of great lipstick at a fraction of the cost! I'm all about canvas and being environmentally friendly, so this canvas bag by Marc Jacobs is a great way to do that and get your hands on Marc Jacobs for a lot less!

I'd like to bring your attention to the wooden accessories for a moment, which are THE choice for the summer season. The following are a few favorites from the Saltalamacchia collection which are hot off Maria Cornejo's resort collection!

Another focus of the outfit is the jean jacket. I've recently established that although I'm not the best at saving money, I am extremely picky with my clothing. Let's just say I've been in search of the perfect jean jacket for a few months now! Now with this outfit I have a jean jacket and a pair of jeans. Pulling off the denim-on denim look is a task itself, however, the easiest way to do so is breaking it up with a bright tunic.

The scarf I'm using is a fine fringe scarf that many wear around their necks. The material however is so thin and the patterns are always so eye catching, so I thought, why not! This is a look I'll definitely work this summer!

SHUT THE FFFRONT DOOR!!!

I'm a huge fan of Sex and the City, HUGE! From when it aired as a TV show, to freaking out after hearing it was coming back as a movie, and nearly deafening my family as I read and then re-reading a feature in my People magazine in the fall around 10 times over until it registered that YES, there was going to be a SECOND MOVIE.
And what, what? In my neck of the woods!

If I haven't already made my self look like an overly obsessed freak (eep), allow me to further assert that when I say that I love Sarah Jessica Parker. Not only Carrie Bradshaw, but S-to-the-J-to-the-P.

Hijabification necessary? Hardly! The need for me to stop making up words? Definitely necessary.

As much as I love the sun and hot weather that comes around this time of year, when I imagine wearing my hijabi wardrobe in the summer, I cringe. Even more so, when you're asked to spend a day at the beach with friends, or are going out for a summer barbeque. Earlier, that would have meant D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R, but today there are a lot of ways to channel that 'beach look' without bearing all that skin!

1) Opt for a brighter hijab with some candy coloured shades
2) A maxi dress and light cardigan will have you looking gorgeous, and the outfit? Total breeze.
3) Colourful harem trousers with some great gladiators and a light coloured tighter top will transform your look to a bohemian babe
4) A pair of jeans rolled up with some great flip flops and casual chiffon top won't make you feel overdone.
5) Footbed sandals, a beach bag, jeans and a cool drink will keep you frosted

I'm always scanning magazines, whether they're sent straight to my mailbox outside my house or the plethora available online, it's what I've been doing since I was 12. More recently, after I started wearing the Hijab, I had my eyes peeled for things that were more hijabi friendly. Of course, I've gotten pretty good at styling hijabi friendly outfits from individual pieces, but now and then I come across outfits and tips that are directly applicable to Hijabis.

Here are a few excerpts just like this from the online magazine at one of my favorite online shops, ASOS. Perhaps it may serve as inspiration to you!

I can't say that I've ever seen a magazine incorporate the church, but the "Christening Chic" definitely got a chuckle out of me. Almost ironic as this is a hijabifashionista blog, but at least I don't usually try to be secular! Regardless, the maxi paired with a suede jacket is something we haven't seen before, so saddle up!

Opt for a more interesting tunic this summer season. Sequins are my pick, but something bright and interesting (as pictured above) caught my eye for the season!

The layers of light, summer scarves held by a leather belt with attached saddlebag is an interesting and do-able look for the season.

Keep an eye out for coloured and patterned cardigans this season. If you're like me and wear cardigans majority of the time, switching up your cardigan collection is a great way to transition from season to season.

The tribal aesthetic is something I'm attracted to. Take cue and layer some necklaces, keep an eye out for feathered accessories and coloured bangles.

The simple and clean makeup on Mishcha Barton was something I wanted to point out for hijabis this season. If you're a lip-colour/eye liner wearing hijabi, this is a great look for the summer.

On the radar- Pure by Alfred Sung

On my other blog, I wrote about Joe Mimran, designer of Joe Fresh and creative developer of brands like Alfred Sung and Club Monaco. His work is genius and as a student and bargain shopper, it's no surprise I'm a fan of labels like these! This post is dedicated to the Alfred Sung collection "Pure" available at Zellers stores. I had never found myself at a Zellers before Pure came around. Now I'm there every other week! The pieces are amazing, and I honestly feel as if Sung and his team had hijabis in mind when Pure was created.

I always find myself throwing on a tee, some jeans, a cardigan and a hijab for a simple and easy outfit that looks put together (well, as long as my hijab is ironed haha). You can easily style this outfit with a bright or even classic bag, or a few wooden accessories. However the tee really makes the outfit. Now i'm not talking about licensed tees, but rather a classic, clean tee like these by Alfred Sung. And look at that price!!

Better than a cropped jacket, which are usually adorable and can be oh so chic, is this gorgeous safari jacket at a great length that's not only hijabi friendly, but also flattering for many body types!

I'm not sure when girls are NOT in search of the perfect bag! Even when you have one you're content with, you're on the lookout for the next! So here's a great one for summer classes, or just a light bag to carry all your necessities this season!

These jeans would look great with tops of all lengths, and there are a variety of styles to choose from to fit your comfort zone.

I wanted a pair of light khakis this season, so I purchased the trousers here on the far left. I absolutely love them! A great purchase. The store I go to didn't seem to have the black ones on the right, but once I see them, I'm definitely pouncing!

Check out the long top in the middle. Made for hijabis I tell ya!

For this summer, I'm telling you - invest in something jean!!! Jean jackets are back and they're HUGE. That aside though, there's an even more casual jean top around, that's a jean button up. They're very casual and are, in my eyes, summer's replacement of the plaid button up that was thrown on (in my case at least) all throughout this past fall and winter! Well, I've always wondered if I could design a jean top with the same casual effect made a little more feminine and put together. Because, I'm not a big fan of layering over the summer, and a button up worn loosely over a long tank, with a hijab, just doesn't cut it for summer's hot weather. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that Pure had it done for me. I can't locate a picture of the top online, but I'd definitely check it out if I were you!

BTW- if you're looking for a new perfume, my sister purchased "Jewel" by Alfred Sung which smells heavenly! I love it! I'm sure I sound like I'm obsessed with the label, and well, I won't deny it!

I was out shopping today, and happened to come by a cardigan I absolutely adored! I'm constantly on the lookout for cardigans with a little edge or something different as they're a main component of my wardrobe all year around. Not only is this cardigan's unique design a edgy and interesting, but it's also incredibly light and comfortable. The one I came across today was different tones of purple and oh so soft. Is there such a thing? There is for hijabis. I found this great blouse at yesstyle.com, one of my favorite sites

for online shopping along with others like Queen's wardrobe and asos.com. I'm currently on the job hunt (ugh) so until then, this red blouse will have to wait, although I'm more than excited to make this purchase later this season! Something classic and versatile like this will take you right into the next few seasons. Wear it alone, with a cardigan highlighting the ruffles, with a blazer for a more conservative look, or pencil skirt at a party with the gals.

Perhaps to dinner:

I would reccomend wearing the hijab in a turkish style, minimizing the wrapping around the head, and tying the remaining fabric around your neck. This style will highlight the collar rather than cover it up if worn khaleeji style etc.

Although abayas are far from what I wear day to day, and would virtually sit in my closet until I find myself back in the gulf or going to the masjid for taraweeh during Ramadan or Eid, I've always wanted the PERFECT abaya for just that. Confession: As many as we have in our house that belong to my sister or my mother, I don't own one. Being Arab, and as in love with them as I am, that's probably something I should own, however I've yet to find a long enough one for my 5'10 frame, the pressure/need for one, and one gorgeous and versatile enough. I guess I am picky! Hahahaha. Anyway, I've been rummaging through the web and have been coming across a few abaya designers (you may have noticed...), and this is one worth posting about. Ladies, this is Amal Murad.

I love the cuff detail on the third one, and the tribal detail on the collar. It almost has an aboriginal art vibe to it, which I absolutely adore!!

I'm constantly on style.com reading up on the stylefile blog, watching new videos (I've loved Jeanne Beker since I was 12), and flipping through collection after another while taking notes (I know, I take notes). Ideas constantly come to me for styling clothing for women in hijab, and as readers you know I use pieces for the outfits from EVERYWHERE which then serve as inspiration to you who then go out and purchase pieces that YOU like. There's this funnel type of inspiration, which I know from experience works well, however it's always been a challenge to find a direct link between myself and you lovely ladies, my readers that omits this funnel occurrence and gets you exactly what I'm talking about. This was all solved two weeks ago when I came across MAYSAA, a line impressively designed for women in hijab.

The website reads:

Double it up this Summer with Great Accent Scarves -- Otrera

I'm a huge fan of wearing multiple scarves during the fall, your hijab and what I call an 'accent scarve" worn loosely around your neck. I previously posted about them here, and here. During the summer, I like to keep my outfits light and previously ruled that look out for the summer months. That is, until I came across Otrera. Designed and created by Elle Sakellis, the line of scarves was named after the "greek warrior goddess of her grandmother's stories. Rather than combat, though, Otrera scarves are made for fashion" (DiaDiwan). Once I spotted these, with their colourful palletes and middle eastern references using the 'khamsa', I completely waved my rule that kept accent scarves in the fall, as they've proved to be an alternative 'pop of colour' in your outfits this summer.

I'm not all about celebreties, frankly I could care less what who is up to, and i've been qouted on more than one occasion to say that "I don't care who's doing what, where, or how, as much as I care what they're wearing while they're doing it". And Kim Kardashian has a great sense of style, which can be used as fashion inspiration for hijabis. The following outfit is one that sparked a plethora of ideas in my mind:

For this season:

1) Invest in a blazer. I've previously explained the cost:wear ratio, which will help you decide on any purchase you make. Believe me, I have many pieces in my closet that I adore, but have never worn, or only worn once or twice. As nice as they are hanging there, I'm not satisfied with purchases like that. To stay away from that, I've started keeping track of how much I'll spend on an outfit. If the price tag is hefty, I wonder how many times I'll wear it, and come up with a cost:wear ratio. If I'm comfortable with the result, it's a good buy. This is a perfect shopping tool to use when shopping for a blazer. The price tag for a quality blazer may not sit with you at first, but if you're comfortable in it, and you love it, the fashion possibilities are endless, and you're sure to be satisfied with your purchase.

2) Get a pair of gladiator sandals you LOVE! They come in all different styles now, they're EVERYWHERE, and you can get a great pair for close to nothing! With so many options, you can really express yourself with a pair this season!

3) A printed blouse. Floral print is really popular this season, but so are splashes of colour and draping. My favorite draping was down the runways in Diane Von Furstenburg's SS2010 collection. This trend can easily be added to your wardrobe in a versatile, fun or elegant blouse. Go for a light material like chiffon, wear it alone, under a cardigan or blazer. Purchase one with splashes of different colours so you have multiple hijab options, which will definitely increase the times you'll wear it, and totally transform the look every time you change something up!

A long necklace is sure to add some charm to the outfit, and a little sparkle peeping under a hijab is a detail many will notice.

Keep on the lookout for a post on wooden accessories. The bangle above is from Aldo accessories, but they're found all over now, and are great for this season's tribal and bohemian references found all over the runways!

DAS collection

If you follow my other blog, PDF, you've read about my current exploration of my Arab roots the only way I can at the moment - through the web. I've rediscovered music from the Arab world I absolutely LOVE, and more relevantly, blogs from my favorite place to visit-- The Arabian Gulf. My current obsession proves to be more fruitful everyday as I uncover treasures from the Arab world I've never been introduced to. I could not ignore the talent of two Emarati ladies who've created gorgeous collection after another of Abayas. By far my favorites yet!

Gorgeous design duo Hind and Reem Beljafla are the creators and designers of DAS, a collection whose framework is outlined on their website. I honestly feel that their mission statement, although particular to the DAS collection, also represents the modern, fashion conscious woman in hijab. We wear it for many reasons, however for myself particularly it's a reflection of my identity as a muslim woman. In my previous post I described the longlasting impression Oman has had on me, but I'd also like to add that I was also greatly impressed with Oman's ability to stay true to it's traditions and history as well as keeping up with modernity. As one who studies fashion, I can tell designers of DAS have a good eye for it, but balance this everchanging and fast paced realm with that of tradition and history, feeding to women who want to charge ahead in the direction of the fashion realm as well as hold true to their roots and traditions. The DAS website reads:

"Today the Abaya has transformed in many ways, especially when it comes to the introduction of colour. It is however still imperative that it remains a conservative garment worn by women as part of the traditional attire but nowadays more suited to highlight individuality, elegance and comfort.

There's something about the Gulf...
In my last visit to Oman, there was an undeniable beauty in the environment, the cleanliness was more than welcoming, the weather- hot, but I was too distracted by everything going on. You leave Oman with vivid memories - I can't smell Jasmine without remembering driving past clean, paved roads lined with Jasmine bushes. There's also an undeniable elegance about the country, especially Muscat and I'm positive the way Omanis dressed was a part of it, and Abayas certainly played a large role in that.

So here I am far, far away from my favorite places in Muscat, Oman, adoring abayas from my home in central Canada, where i've always lived, and where I'm more comfortable - in jeans.

Nearly time to Celebrate!

Just yesterday, my sister asked what I was planning on wearing for Eid. With a new semester starting, Ramadan happening, thinking about my priorities, navigating my way around a new campus, I shrugged her question off, not realizing how soon it really was!

As a young child, Eid was always a chance for a new outfit - and with my parents paying for it, the options were endless! Now that I'm older and my part time job is all I have to speak for the additions to my wardrobe, outfits for events like Eid have to be well thought out.

I purposefully bought a tasteful graduation dress so that I could wear it more than once, and to please my rather sinical outlook towards what I've come to think of as a rather tacky event such as a highschool graduation. Now that graduation is over, I've been regretting the amount of money I spent on the dress, and now that Eid is coming up, I'm thinking of wearing my graduation dress with a vtg blazer I picked up today to even out the cost:wear ratio.

For those of you who don't have to justify your graduation purchase to yourself, put together an outfit like the one below that satisfies your needs for the rest of the season (maybe winter as well!). I incorporated some of Rachel Zoe's must haves for fall in the following Eid outfit.

Knit cape, Belt, statement necklace, and metallic heels.

A blue mini dress belted under a knit sweater looks well put together. Adding a little edge with the layered statement necklace, a pair of tasteful metallic heels complete your Eid look, without you having to purchase MORE pieces independent of your Eid outfit for the rest of fall!

As I'm sure you've all learned by now, I love shopping vintage! The eccentric, the simple, the floral, the lousy - you name it, I buy them whether they're fabulous from the start, or I buy them as "challenge" pieces to test my fashion savvy.

The Favorite item of the day is the loose, immaculately decorated vintage sweater! If it's plain, wear it with a thin studded belt, slimmest pants and gladiator sandals. Turn your look more folk inspired with bangles and cuffs of different shapes and sizes, or more eccentric with a bright hijab and high heeled ankle boots!

One of my all time favorite fashion muses? Kate Moss. So naturally, torn jeans are just a tad too Kate Moss for me to pass up. You can wear the jeans with virtually anything (basic longsleeve, belt and hijab, or boots, a rocker tee layered under a cardigan, or....), but I wanted to give off a rocker feel with this outfit. The other day I stopped by Old Navy where I had worked as a part time job for a few.. well, weeks. Turns out folding clothes is basically the equivalent to torture for me. I'm embarrased to say I did whimper quite regularly after turning around and finding that the table piled half a meter high with multi colored tees that I folded and neatly organized for over an hour had been completely ruined and fallen back to it's orginal, messy state because SOME GIRL decided she was going to dig for her freaking extra large! For the record, I am not putting down any extra large ladies out there, but people; ASK! And YES, I said 'whimper'. How pathetic, right?

Back to what I was saying... as I re entered the store I had made a point to stay away from as a way to restore my sanity after my two painful weeks as an associate, I came across these long tanks for 3 dollars!! Now THAT'S a bargain. I wanted them to be extra loose and extra long so, well, I bought them in an extra large. Goodness, I'm so logical.

The long tank works well with my leather jacket, so I encourage you to try it yourself - especially if you've been staying away from one of fall's must haves because of the length. BUT! make sure you wear the jacket open so you don't have that incredibly awkward skirt-over-jeans thing. Although I would probably opt for a dark hijab, I wanted to go with a brown for this to mimick the autumn colors in the scarf below which, I added so that it's worn over the leather, under the collar.

In this strong look, I wanted to ground it with the red pumps which add more feminity to the stark rocker vibe. If you wanted to keep that vibe, I'd opt for an ankle boot!

The red in the pumps can also bring a more dramatic feel to the outfit, when paired with the right clutch. Think Alexander McQueen clutch with rings!! Gorgeous.

Salaam and Ramadan Kareem!!

Hopefully you're all taking advantage of the last ten days of the beautiful month of Ramadan!

I'm back and hitting you with the latest in fall fashion - with a hijabi twist! Fall is def. my favorite season when it comes to fashion. In fact, as much as I'd been anticipating sunny warm weather ALL summer here in Winnipeg (which - may I add- didn't come besides a long weekend or two), now, my wardrobe is begging for the sun to disappear and leave me in the foggy, damp city Winnipeg becomes this time of year so I can wear the trends I've been studying off the runways!

The other day, while I was watching Regis and Kelly I was more than pleased to see that Rachel Zoe was not only the guest- but also there to discuss her favorite pieces for fall. For those of you who don't know, Rachel Zoe is one of the world's most renowned stylists! Hiring someone like her would cost thousands - so this episode was one I definitely appreciated! That Vintage Shopperrrr

I love a piece that you can dress up, over and over again! As a student with a part time job, I have to admit it's tough keeping up with fashion, and purchasing new pieces to convey my everchanging moods. That "one" piece helps me out oh - so -much.

That piece can be anything in your closet that's versitile. One you can dress up or down, one that's perfect for nearly all ocassions. One where the way you wear it, completely transforms it. One where... okaaaaay you get the point.

My "one" piece? My blank tank. It's loose, and hits right above mid thigh which makes it wearable even with a wide leg jean (which are hard to get looking perfect with a long top).

For the outfit above, I wanted to incorporate a few pieces that help me rock my lastest fav. style - indie.

I compiled items I loved - the shoes, the bag, the wayfarers, which add some color on what is initially a dark pallete. The beads help jazz the tank up, as well as compliment the tough leather jeacket. My jacket is gray and I tried to get a picture of one closest to my own.

Bags- shoulder bags with long straps are great now. But before you go out and purchase one, check your storage rooms or your older wardrobes (I checked my mothers') and she had two!! I visited a thrift store and they had soo many! Check yours! If you're not into the environmentally friendliness of second hand shops (okay, so that was a tad biased... haha), that's totally cool - shops now are stocked with them!

Fair trade Hijabi rockin' it indie!

For summer I haven't yet decided what look I'm going to rock. Of course I dress to my mood,but while summer 2009 runways are lined with models sporting athletic attire, clothing inspired by geometric shapes, glamour, and looks inspired by the economic meltdown and the depression of 1929, we fashionistas have our work cut out for us. My purchases for the season are leaning towards boho and indie trends.

Now believe me, I've been trying to capture indie fashion for a while now, but I'm only just getting it. To exude indie fashion, go for the slouchy, clean but carefree look. Babydolls? No. Lose 'em. haha. i mean, save them for another day.

My last indie outfit: (yesterday)

gladiator sandals, black straight leg jeans, a vintage velvet blazer with gold embriodery worn over a dark green tank, a black hijab worn over a high bun, and a thrift store purse.

A few months back I decided all the jewlery I was going to buy was going to be either fair trade or second hand. It's really important that your purchases are supporting those who created them, not the middlemen. This way you'd be helping the worldwide fair trade movement which aims to help producers and farmers reach a financial self sustainability. RUDE AWAKENING: I don't know why my texts' all underlined. I'm technologically challenged. Bear with me.

So I stopped by a thrift store yesterday and picked up a black skirt that goes right down to a tad above my ankles. I said, heck. I'mma buy this! haha.

Right now, colored leggings are what the street stylers are rocking on my favorite websites, so I decided I'm going to find a hijabi friendly way to wear these. With strappy gladiators. Yesssss.

I know what you're thinking. Socks with sandals? You've got to be kidding me. Nah girl. These aren't those bunchy Hanes socks. These are chic bright yellow leggings. And I'm going to pull this off.

You know the only thing I miss about my hair? That effortless look you can pull off. I mean, mornings, regardless that I spent half an hour on my hair, I made it look like I just rolled out of bed. And the best thing was, I could wear anything and make it look fabulous because my hair would complete the look! For instance, as a hijabi you see a girl in the mall looking fabulous. And you look at her outfit independant from her hair and you're like "how the heck did she get THAT to look good?" and then you realize you could never pull it off with your hijab. Sisters do you hear me? Well, I decided I was going to shut out that pessimistic asma and let the hijabifashionista in me speak.

What did she say?

She said that girl I saw at the organic restaurant sipping her coffee (a little fast may I add) in that plain men's tee and leggings (looking Oh-so-cute), has nothing on what a hijabi sister can do.

What did I say?

Amen, girl. Amen!

I don't know about you, but I am definetly tired of all the layers I have to wear. Don't get me wrong, I love layers. But with the sun shining, and everyone in minidresses, I felt the need to let everyone know that hijabis wear dresses too- and we look oh-so-nice in 'em!

I recently purchased a maxi dress, and I KNOW I can get a whole lotta wear out of it. My spring/summer dress code? Dresses. :D

I lovelovelove coral! Just two days ago I tried on a coral maxi and FELL IN LOVE! Too bad it wasn't appropriate for the event I was headed to that night, or else I would have purchased it. Actually, a few months before and i would have purchased it anyway - but I'm trying to stay away from shopaholic-(ism?) as I feel I'm at the very brink. eep.

If you look through old posts, you'll come across another label I've profiled. After receiving an email today from the president of Taqwa Iman inc. inviting me to check out her revamped spring/summer collection, I followed her advice and all I could say was "wow".

The following look is my favorite from the site. The skirt is really nice, and think of all the possibilities; heels and silky hijab for a formal evening, sandals and a white cardigan for the daytime, a long black cardigan to dress it down but keep it classy.......

Must- Haves for Spring!

The above image are the Hijabifashionista's Must-Haves for spring. I think that clothing is a great way to express oneself, so I definetly wouldn't tell you exactly what to wear. I'm just reporting what's fashionable at the mo. I've chosen general pieces so there's room for your individual style. For example ,I say totes, you say yellow. Or maybe black! Whatever you like...

These must haves are definately all applicable for sisters in abaya.

1- Sunglasses. Don't shy behind those simple shades. DO IT BEHIND FUN ONES! Just kidding. Go for the bold, retro look. Everyone looks good in sunglasses, and they're great for a quick winter to spring outfit makeover. So the next time you're shopping for these, don't hesitate to try on the crazy orange spotted ones you would have never picked up before!

2 - Totes! This season, think... COLOR. Large bags are great for everything - from a little makeup and phone to work documents. I've personally been holding my clutch everywhere, and I'm def. on the search for a bright one!

3 - Kicks! Put on those strappy sandals, those bright heels, and most def. those gladiator sandals! It's hard to show off a bland heel under long trousers when all the other women are in flouncy skirts and delicious dresses, but your friends won't miss those bright yellow heels regardless how large a flare/ skirt you wear! (Don't go crazy with the flare.. but I'll get to that).

4 - Soft Make- up! If you're into make up, hunt down those soft hues for an everyday look, and colors like coral, pink, and red lips for the more formal events. Eyes - go bold with blue eyeliner (that's what I'm wearing), yellow eye shadow, and and and.............

5 - Scarves! Sisters, don't spend your money buying a scarf in every color! Make sure you have your neutrals, and then buy one or two bright ones for that saturday out with your friends!

SPRING 2009: Harem Pants

I was soo excited when a sister commented and let me know she purchased Harem pants and that she needed help finding ways to wear them! This trend is super hard to wear- but if you do it right, you can look elegant, grunge, girly, or anything you want to be-- fabulously!

The best tip I have, is to wear structured pieces with them. Because the harem pants are very loose, having many elegant folds, one should wear a structured piece like a blazer for a complete, well thought out look. Here are two outfits I created:

Ankle boots would work amazingly with harem pants. Boots are an accessory that can really chanage the outfit you're wearing. If you go with a more vintage boot- it can transform your outfit respectively. Adding details like gorgeous buckles, and studded heels will really make your outfit stand out.

Try a leather jacket with your harem pants- but if you do so, don't go for ankle boots that scream "tough", rather go for ones you wouldn't think to wear right away- like colored ones. Notice how I used the studded ankle boots with the broad shoulder blazer on the right instead of the studded leather jacket on the left.

Remember to go for chunky rings to complete the look.
Two of my favorite designers (along with others) have Harem pants featured in their collections! Let's take a look at their outfits, and take ideas from them!
Proenza Schouler:

This one above is worn with a long top (like a tunic), and you can wear it like this, unless yours are much looser, or if it's low crotched.

Diane Von Furstenburg:

The pic above is an alternative to the "structured top for harem pants" rule that I mentioned above. It works really well, but cinch it somewhere so it provides for some structure in the outfit.
A structured top-- wear a structured button up or stiff longsleeve.

A structured top, and a loose blazer.

^This is just cool.

DO NOTS:

- Do not wear a tunic with your harem pants if they have low crotches. If they do not, and are tapered at the bottoms, that's fine (check proenza schouler pics above).

- Do not cover the waistband because they allow for more detail, and show where all the folds are coming from.

- Do not go for heavy fabrics like cotton - unless you love them. That's always an exception.

Leather Gloves, Gorgeous Bags, Modern Umbrellas and Structured Trenches.

- If you're buying a bag this season, go for one with straps like the above (I'm refferring to the metal chain that the leather runs through).

- Another tip for buying bags, browns are nice, also burnt oranges and the color above.

- Leather gloves-- I just bought a pair. An amazing buy actually. They're Joe and only cost me about 5.00! They were small and I need like a large or med., but they were five bucks, so I thought "These are going to fit!". Haha, but now they've stretched out a bit so it's all good. Good thinking Asma, gooood thinking!

- For umbrellas- GO NUTS!

- Olive green hijabs!! I want one! Inshaallah.....

Dress a Mannequin-- For Hijabi Spring

Soooo, we all know how much I love a good trench coat, so here's yet another post including one.

Now, I've recieved a lot of emails about making outfits for larger sizes. I def. want to expand the blog and make specific posts for larger sizes. However, I want you girls to understand that a lot of what I've already posted can work for all sizes. Just because the pictures of the clothing are pictures of small sizes doesn't mean the larger ladies can't wear them. So take this as a piece of advice to all the women (and man) who are reading this- take my posts as an idea... if there are jeans, wear jeans but find ones that flatter your body type (and i'll post specifics soon), and if there's a trench (which really flatter everyone.. depending on where the belt is, and a few other factors), find a trench that you like. You catch my drift?

A Hijabi's Take on Breakfast at Tiffany's

If you don't already know, I'm in love with the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany's. Just watching it is a feast for any fashionista's eyes.

The inspiration for this outfit came from the very first scene where she climbs out of a taxi cab and walks up to a Tiffany store window. Below:

Her hands are full, it's early morning, and I just lllllooooooove it! So I hijabified it!
I'm in love with trench coats for spring. Why not go for a light, breezy one like the above? The diamonds she usually wears on her head, I put on her feet (no ladies, I was not going to make you put diamond clips on your hijab or something equally weird that I would most likely advise you to do.) WAIT A MINUTE! That sounds kinda nice. wait for it.. YES! I like it! A brooch on your hijab! DOOOO IT!
The long gloves complete a look of elegance you can acheive in a few seconds in your quick, morning routine. With a clutch and newspaper under your arm, juggling a coffee (not from starbucks), and croissant- or whatever else you like (I'll eat anything haha)- you'll look gorgeous sporting an outfit inspired by a fashionista's fav classic!

Hijabi Romantics

High waisted trousers are still in, ladies! Bask in the hijabiness! hahahaha. Add a thin belt to very top, as a transition piece from the blouse to the stark white in the trouser. I love these heels, they're so off of Whitney's feet from The City. I added the lipstick because I love a light pink on the lips- especially with a white hijab, you'll just glow!

Layering in Spring

Belt over blouse- positioned around waist (look at the model on the left)

As you know, I love the wiiiiiiiiiide leg trouser, and they're perfect for the warmer weather as they don't stick to you! Because we're layering, you don't want to wear pieces that cling - you won't feel comfortable at all! Jjust because it's spring, I'm not letting go of the fringe! But tone it down a tad- just a little on a bag or a decorative touch on footwear (like the heels above)!

Now, tie your hijab in a turkish style so as not to let the material hang over your top and cover the beautiful details on the blouse!

Perfectly Plaid

A high fashion set for the hijabi who's ready for winter. Why not purchase a plaid coat this season? This bright blue allows you to wear it in many ways- go blue, black, even GOLD with this look.

The pleated high waisted straight leg pant is really high fashion this season - so if you're looking for something in that direction, this is it! I saw them at H&M last summer, and I wish I bought them (we don't have an H&M here) :(. Insha allah next time I come across them I def will!!

Eid Outfits

Tunics are great for hijabis- any time of the year. I included two in the outfits above. The outfits above highlight a few ideas to consider for your Eid outfits:
- trouser or skirt to create streamline effect
- clutch
- gloves (yes for indoors)
-statement making heels
- bow ties on your tunic
- pashmina scarf to tie loosely

HIJABIFASHIONISTA Caution:
With most tunics, (unless their fabric allows them to just hang off your shoulders) your frame seems really broad. SOOO if you tie your hijab tightly, your head will look hella small. Wear your hijab loose, in a khaleeji style, or with an underscarf and it stylishly tossed around your head!

A Vintage Eid

So you're feeling like going to the prayer covered, and fabulously vintage. yuuum I love just saying the word. "Vintage". It's so soothing, is it not?

I especially love the outfit on the right because I love the scarf. Stores are sporting this hood scarf now because "it's cold in the winter but I hate wearing hats", ALSO perfect for us hijabis. Wear an underscarf underneath it and casually put it on. With a dress in a tweedy knit, you'll look so winter fabulous!

Vintage Ideas:

- chunky bracelets
- tweed
- heels with fabric

The two ways I created the outfits to work with dresses:

Eid On a Budget- The Three C's

So Eid comes up out of nowhere and starts demanding money for a new outfit.. LIKE HUH? For some reason, I always end up broke around eid time, or just enough money for an outfit and the guilt of not being able to shop for months after.

SO WHAT DO I SAY?

I say, use that bit of money to buy ONE ITEM! Take for example the outfit I made above. Everything in there are items you can find in your closet.. (If you're thinking UHHH NO! then keep reading, and I'll teach you a few tips on how to spice up a few pieces to make them eid-spectacular!!)

IF I didn't have 2 tests and a presentation on eid, and I actually got to celebrate it- thennnn I would spend that money on a coat. WHY? Because it's something I can debut at the eid prayer and in all the pictures and so on, but I get to use it for the rest of the season (BECAUSE God knows i need a new one!).

With a new coat:
- Take your best trousers or even formal jeans. I would go for a wide leg because they always look classic, clean, and chic. ahh The Three C's
- A simple pashmina should do the trick, but to spice it up, go for a brooch and place it stylishly on the scarf. Your mother's jewlery box? A thrift store?
- Your favorite heels! Wearing something YOU love, makes it feel that much better!
- NoOOOOW everyone wants a new bag for every occasion, but if you don't have the money for it, or even the time to pick one up, take that silk scarf you paid so much for only to find out that it was too slippery and annoying to wear and TIE it onto one of the arms of your bag. Chic in one simple step!

This outfit reminds me of my outfit last Eid. I wore my favorite heels (a biege crocodile stamped leather), with a simple black skirt I wore a hundred times before (but I mean, it's so simple no one could tell or care), a black trench, my favorite clutch, and a new GREEN pashmina with a print. Sooo, I hadn't bought anything new except for the scarf - and I loved it! classic, clean, chic, and more importantly- CHEAP!

Just a toe, testin' the waters.. OH SHOOT we're covered in snow.

Aren't you jealose? Like for real, I'm loving the knit hats everyone's wearing this season. I was sitting in the library with two friends and I pointed out maybe 3 girls wearing one in like 3 seconds! I was like, look they're covering their hair! It's like a hijab - besides the bare neck, leggings as pants, and the whole non hijabi :( ordeal. So anyway, I decided I would go home and try to wear one of my knit hats that I bougt and hijabify it.

So I did, AND I DID! IT WORKED! You know those underscarves? Like the short tube looking thing you wear under your hijab sometime.. anyway, it's like a headband. I wore that under the knit hat because the girls that wear the knit hats always show a bit of hair if not most of it.

Now that I had the black headband on, I could wear the hat as far back as I pleased. For the neck dillemma, I wrapped one of my pashminas around my neck like a scarf. I looked all layered and cozy. Love it.

MORE TIPS:
LAYER over your ankle boots with legwarmers.
WEAR your cute coat. (gosh I need a new one.. a few more weeks at work insha allah)

So, one of my favorite models is Agnyess Deyn.She's just......great! haha

Anyway, I saw this ad and I created an outfit based on it! I decided I was going to calm down on the leather jackets for a while because I almost felt like I over did that.. NO. I take that back.

So anyway, instead I put the heather in gloves. In my eyes, Gloves make an outfit go one level up on the chic scale!

I also love studded belts- especially after I saw SJP wear one in Sex and the City because OMG it looked amazing. Okay, so I used one of those to bring an edgier look. However, I wanted it to look SJP style so I added feminine heels and a clutch that almost seems like it doesn't belong - but it does. I'm just going to congratulate myself on this one because I'm loving it! Let me know if you would rock this look!

Prints! Gorgeous Gorgeous Prints!

So I was on a sister's blog that was pointed out to me by another sister; she posts pictures of her outfits on her site, so it's really nice to see the outfit on a person if you want to check her out! Her outfits are quite fashionable .. very different, you can tell she likes unusual pieces- much like myself.

Some sisters asked for younger fashion and so you can check out her blog, I think some of her outfits are a bit more youthful hehe, and so I decided to put together an outfit that would work for the season and suit the younger sisters - although anyone can pull this look off!

I picked out a dress inspired by the perfume "daisy" by Marc Jacobs. I thought to myself; youthful. HMMMM. He described his perfume as a "youthful" fragrance so I associated the word with the perfume, and then daisy and flowers and BAM!! hahaha

The dress was the starting point for the rest of the outfit. I wanted to keep it pretty centered - using the colors in the dress to inspire the colors for the cardigan, flats , and ring. For the bag however, I needed a POP! So, I went with an unusual color- one you wouldn't expect (like I and the sis in the blog above does in her outfits), and I LOVE IT! How about you??

It's fall and soo cold over here! Soon everyone's going to be carrying a thermos (oh and here in the 'peg, we alllll do!).

As I said, I love these cardigans this season where they're longer in the front than the back - and there's no need to tie them up in the front. Let it HANNG, you'll look effortlessly fashionable.

I'm loving the long strap bags this season, I have one, and although I look a fool running to class after lunch hour late with it bouncing off the back of my legs, it looks good everywhere else.
A crazy patterned minimalist top looks great under a cardigan that will tone the whole look down. I looove this outfit!

I took the yellow and black idea from the photos I found below and used them in the outfit above. The first one is a hijabi taxi driver - loving it! The second one is a graduate! It's funny because her school colors are the same as mine... I'm loving the khaleeji hijab under the cap! Might just use it myself insha allah!

Fall Showers

Running a little more than fashionably late to class, but fashionable none the less, with your bag hanging low on your body hitting your legs with every leap after that dreaded bell. Story. Of. My. Life.

SO I found quite a few more gorgeous hijabi pics (like the one below), but I decided to post them gradually with my own outfit. I took the pattern in the host's hijab and made an outfit according the the pattern in a top. (remember, you can always use the pattern in your hijab instead as she did).

This outfit basically screams fall! A gorgeous pashmina, in deep reds, large bold rings, leather gloves, and wide legs! We've covered it all! hehe

Belt the top, or don't - it's your choice and it looks great either way!

I think this woman is a TV host for one of those channels from the gulf. I don't know, she looks familiar but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's quite a funny picture but I love her scarf and matching blazer! But you all know I would have mixed it up a bit with vests and accessories!

Rules and Regulations of Hijab

So recently, a man commented on one of my posts telling me how much he did not approve of my blogging on hijab fashion. It's a apparent that he feels strongly about the hijab, and as much as I love to read comments I would have appreciated it if he put it a little kinder, so as not to say that I "should be punished for the sake of allah". Firstly, I'm pretty sure allah doesn't want you to talk to sisters like that.
Secondly, I do post modest fashion. I do not include skinny jeans or anything that shows the shapes in a woman's body - her curves, etc. I just created this blog to help hijabis out with their fashion needs in a halal way. Fashion is a hobby of mine, and so I created this blog to present my fashion findings and how to hijabify them for myself and others around the world.

The hijab's main point is to promote MODESTY- and that's what my blog is, it's modest fashion. Whenever I post something that's controversial, I do put a little disclaimer, but you can't just look at photos and not read my comments on what I post. You MUST read them both to get the full dose. I do know that there are many muslims who don't like what I'm blogging about, but I keep it quite modest thank you very much. I do apologize if I offended you in any way, but that does not mean i'm going to quit blogging.

This is what I don't like about some people, when they hear fashion, red lights flash in their heads and they want to stay as far away as possible from it screaming 'danger danger' and 'haraam'. You think fashion and islam can't go hand in hand? Check your definition on fashion. I'm not talking about teenage trends - skinny jeans, baby tees, and clingy jumpers, I'm talking high fashion - what's on the runway - How do we make it work our way?

You said that because i'm promoting the patterns etc, i'm taking god's role.
Fashion is an art. Do you think that when the islamic empires built beautiful buildings and created architechture that because they created something beautiful they were taking place of god?

Allah gave us minds to use them, and to create and to inspire, to think, to educate. However, ladies, don't spend all your time on one thing. Allah created everything with a balance - our bodies, the universe, ecosystems, etc. And He wants us to live our lives with balance as well. Don't spend too much time on one thing, especially not on how you look, and what you're wearing. Our minds were created to do the above and so much more, but don't waste your beautiful minds on this one thing.

And although I disagree with you, I do understand where you're coming from, I just hope you would be a little more understanding of where I am coming from. If you do really think that I am doing something that displeases allah, please, contact me, but don't treat me like I don't know what I'm talking about, that I don't know anything about my religion or that I don't read the Quran. Please be a little more considerate and sincere.

(left) The hijabis look fabulous in this pageant don't they? However, I'm not loving the yellow/brown combo in the way she wore it. I would prefer a blazer or something, because this looks a little childish. If you love the colors, my advice is to opt for a gold rather than a brown - especially for fall! For when you can't pray, her nail polish color is great and perfect for the season, deep reds!

(right) isn't she Beautiful? Masha allah! I could tell she was from the Gulf right away! (I know you're thinking, "asma, she has a sash that says "bahrain" on it..." But I could tell... I reeeally could!

Okay, so I woke up for fajr and had to do a little homework, and once I finished, I decided I only had half an hour left before I have to get up for school so I decided to stay up. Fall -- with a splash of berry

So a sister asked for an example of how to keep the bold bright colors in accessories so as not to over do it. No problemo hermana! hah

I used TWO scarves in this outfit. One (the black with colors) is for your neck while you use the other as a hijab. Fall is all about layering, so by wearing this scarf on your neck, not only are you following that rule, but you're also incorporating that "color" i've talked about in my previous posts into your outfit.

That bold color is also used in the pumps (how gorgy!) and in the shades!

Another thing I want you to take from this outfit: The Jacket. It's in a cape design - which is an interesting look that mannequins are sporting everywhere. In jackets, sweaters, cardigans, and ponchos ("a poncho?" "you'll take what I give you and you'll like it!" haha DWP qoute. Sorry, I'm obsessed! I've seen it like in english i think like 30 times, and in spanish like 4! ahah)

What's great about this jacket - or any cropped jacket for that matter, is that you can intentionally wear a long top that has some sort of embroidery or design at the bottom, or you can wear a regular tee, like the one above and it wouldn't matter- you still look great!!

So one of my fav things to do is look for different Do It Yourself projects. I sew a lot, and I always try to make clothing that I wouldn't find anywhere else -- i use my mother's old scarves from who - knows - when, and just put it under the sewing machine. I think, I could just buy that tee shirt, I'd rather make something different.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO here's a DIY:

1)Take a tee shirt - like an extra large- (it doesn't have to be amazing like the one above, it can be your brother's undershirt -- like a creative director from HOLT catalougue said "here's a chance to borrow from the boys"--)

2)cut it along the top as if to make it a boat neck style top, let the edges be a little jagged and fold over - it's the style in it!

3) take a thick belt and wear it low on your torso, and over the top, leaving about 5 inches worth of the shirt to hang under it

4) pull some material of the shirt over the belt (not to cover it, but to let it hang just a little over it) leaving like, 3 inches of the bottom of the shirt to hang under the belt

5) top it off with a vest, or a cropped blazer

YAY! Isn't it fantastic??

I got this idea from a classmate. She was wearing one of those tee shirts that you can get from concerts or like a march for a cause... you know, the ones you don't want to wear but you buy just to support the cause? haha, you know it's true! Well, she cut off from the top of it and it looked like a regular top! Props for her!

Today I wore something pretty bold to school (surprise surprise ). I had a pair of tall boots that I pulled down and folded over so they looked like ankle boots (I always do that! take it as another HF tip), and wore skinny jeans (before you comment...) but they didn't show much because I was wearing a dress I made that went under the calve-- almost to the top of the "ankle boot", and a black cardigan and a black hijab. It was really bold for my regular school outfit where I like to wear a nice top and jeans, but the reaction was PHENOMENAL. People appreciate it when you're bold. And I hella loved the attention. hah

What's in that Magazine??

What's in this fall for accessories? According to the September issue of Fashion Magazine, bright and bold accessories are what it's all about. The photo shoot consisted of brightly beaded necklaces, and clutches, lipstick, with an emphasis on tights - bright yellow, bold reds, and even a pair of Pucci maroon fishnets with a floral design! Looking through this 10 page spread had even me wanting to put on a knee length leather coat and bright yellow tights!

Soooo... with bright accessories being 'what's up' right now, what's a hijabifashionista to do?

So I racked my brain and other magazines for hijabi friendly ideas that didn't consist of tights . For an evening, don't leave without a purple clutch or maybe fushia pumps. The malls are lined with stores selling boots in all sorts of crazy colors that are so popular this season that you don't need to be brave to wear them! (Not suggesting anything about you sisters not being brave, but for the sisters who find it hard to step out of that little fashion box, the colored boots make it easy for you because they're steppin' in!)

Just the other day, i saw a girl sporting bright blye boots that had me saying "masha allah!" ( and yes, I do praise god when it comes to fashion!). Ankle boots are everywhere and a must have this season so why not grab a pair in emerald green or red instead of the brown/black combination you always go for?

Other ways to incorporate bold brights this season;
--> Long Necklaces
--> Bangles and Cuffs
--> Belts!
--> Bags (oh the choices, the choices!)
--> Rings!
--> Your fall coat! (imagine that..ooh lala)
--> Gloves (if you're not buying a new fall coat and yours is a neutral, buy bright gloves!)
--> If you're into make up, think about incorporating a subtle gold into your eyes, a bright lip and when you aren't praying, a plum or cherry colored nail polish. I say plum for darker skin tones, and cherry for lighter ones - although you can just ask the cosmetician and she'll find one for you in either a cherry or a plum no matter your color!

Hijabi Fashionista Tip: According to runways like Gucci, and Dolce and Gabanna, brights all over are NOT what fall's all about. So incorporate them only into your accessories and or a coat. Don't go head to toe -- you'd be stepping over the line of bold yet fashionable to just plain old crazy. hahahhaha

Layering in the Fall!!!

It's Fall??? Time to Layer up! I took the picture off of Free People. We don't have it here in Winnipeg but they did have it in California, and I loved the style so I decided to check it out once I got home. I loved this photo so here is free people hijabified!

I used the color palette in the inspiration piece to create my outfit.

I used a yellow dress that could have easily been worn in the summer (see? you don't need a whole new wardrobe! You just need to add pieces to make them suitable for fall fashion)

Knee high boots that will meet the dress are so perfect this season! If you're looking for a pair besides ankle boots, I would get a pair of these! All the sisters comment on adding tights so do that just in case!

Of course a long sleeve top underneath the dress - but unlike summer, I won't stop there for fall! I'm adding a cape cardigan on top of the dress to break up the bright color, tone it down a bit, and get you ready to walk out your door and greet the autumn leaves!

I wanted to keep this one short! - I know, you're thinking - come on asma.. it's YOU. Short is just not possible. See? I'm rambling already! Anywayyyyyy unlike past seasons where a wide leg pant meant a structured pant - for fall, it's all about the crazy loose high waisted trouser!

On the left I put a structured pant with a loose top.. But this season, it's pretty much the opposite - you should go with slouchy pants, and then a structured top.

A STRUCTURED TOP?? sisters, as much as I'm sure we'd all love to, we can't all go crazy balenciaga - where (in my eyes) 'structured' defines their fall collection. So the easiest way to do this is wear a fitted blazer over a bright top.

WHY A BRIGHT TOP??? this season is really into deep colors, or gothic alexander mcqueen -ish style- but you can have a bright something in there somewhere (and i DON"T mean your hijab!).

HIJABIFASHIONISTA TIP:

To get the slouchy effect, go for a trouser one size bigger. Then it pleates in all the right places!

Yay for a new way for me to convey hijabifashion to you readers! I love mannequins and I would love to dress them! haha, I know it sounds silly and a bit creepy, but seriously. Who dresses the mannequins at stores? I would sure like to know!

So along with the deep reds that I love and that I discussed in my previous post - I'm loving the blue from the royal rainbow.

The mannequin was dressed in gray skinny jeans and studded boots. I'm thinking, alright... that's like an under-exaggerated kate moss - just baggier and higher boots- I'm thinking we up it a little on the chic factor and go with an ankle boot which I LOVE for fall. A gray trouser would work much better. All the fashionista's wear trousers ,... jeans are either going to get hella looser, or left out all together.

Her coat is nice, and if you have something like it in your closet, you can spice it up a bit with a thin belt like the one in the outfit I created.

HijabiFashionista tip for fall:
If you're confused on what blues to buy or what colors to go for at all - you don't HAVE to memorize the royal rainbow, but remember this; they're all berry colors.

Although I'm reluctant to let go of summer, I'm able to embrace fall because of it's fashion! My favorite thing about fall? The color pallete! Sisters, we have a lot to work with! I have to point out- crazy bright colors are not flattering for all skin shades, but deep ones (like this season is sporting) look great on EVERYONE! Yippee for me!

What colors to go for? Deep reds, violets, berry blues, ashy oranges, and emerald greens! or as I like to call them - Colors of the royal rainbow!

Here's an outfit I created that shows how we hijabifashionistas can work deep reds!

I went with a very typical fall outfit, but there are a few key things that are different about this season;

- leg warmers. Most girls these days rock 'em to a street style with skinny jeans and flats, but we hijabifashionistas like 'em to lengthen our ankle boots so we're covered to our calf length skirt.

SHOPPING MUST HAVE: ankle boots. Sisters, you need a pair this season.

SHOPPING MUST HAVE: a cute, light coat

Hijabi Store!!!!!!!!!

OOOOO KAY! So I posted on this a whiiiiiillleee back off of a promotional vid on youtube. The store was called Vharda and I'm pretty sure it was a "holy designers" forever continuing post. ANYWAY! I believe this store is one of the best stores that are FOR hijabis. I mean, you can always shop anywhere online and look for tunics and tops, etc. but on Vharda.com they have really cute and chic tunics dresses, hijabs, AND a trench I want!

It also has a super cute layout - somewhere I really advise you to visit. The prices you ask? AMAZING! Like,.... the forever 21, or H&M solely for hijabis.

They do however have a few areas that need to be stocked but insha allah it'll be all done soon!

Trend Update: solution to the "jeans" problem

A few season's past, I posted on how wide leg jeans are the solution to the hijabi jeans problem (too tight, too controvercial) and I have included them in most of my outfits. But besides a skirt, a dress, a abaya, dress pants, and wide legs- there is yet another solution to add to the list (and hijabis say the don't have enough choices.. tsk tsk)...

The solution?

THE BOYFRIEND TROUSER

Just like straight leg, boot cut, skinny, wide leg, etc., the boyfriend trouser is just another cut - another hijabi friendly cut that is!

I feel like stealing a pair of my brother's pants... confession time? I actually have tried them on, and the looseness actually worked- just like this boyfriend trouser.

A store I know for a fact that sells them; the gap

.. if you can't find a gap (for whatever odd reason hehe), then go into any asian clothing store -if they're "hip imports" from what the girls over there where, then the store should carry them.

Adding a few touches to hijabi fy that outfit!

A lot of the time - even when I'm watching television, I see a woman wearing an outfit and I think... all she needs is a hijab and a long sleeve top and she would be a stunning hijabifashionista! A friend of mine told me that at the masjid in her city, they would add a hijab or an accessory to a sister who walked into the doors to make their outfit more fashionable (like, how cool is that yarr??).

Thus, I thought I would do the same with these street style images I found. Let's dissect my work!

Printed dress on left outfit:
-->I didn't want to just continue the dominant color of green in the longsleeve top, so I noticed
the brown belt she was wearing (very good choice on her part) and put the long sleeve top in that color. I did the same for the hijab.

--> I'm in LOVE with ankle boots so I put those in, but you could go with any sandal that coordinates with the style.. a gladiator sandal is just soo nice this season.

--> I was getting a laid back, boho, easy - breezy vibe from her, so I decided a couple of bangles would really make the outfit and colors stand out more. Plus, with these two little touches, it seems like you spent more time on your outfit rather than just throwing over a dress and long sleeve.

For the calve length skirt on the right:
--> boots to cover up that skin!

--> long sleeve top underneath to cover up in case you take off the blazer at work or where ever, or just to cover those inches of skin in the arms

--> I love it when hijabis wear a scarf on their head and another on their neck. Just like last fall, everyone's going to be wearing pashminas or shemagh-inspired scarves around their necks - there's no reason you can't either!

-->a black hijab because you're wearing a scarf on your neck.

HijabiFashionista tip:
when in doubt, wear a black hijab. For the fall season, what's the new black? Black.

RUDE AWAKENING: Make sure you aren't going to the masjid or going to pray where ever you're going when wearing this outfit, or as many sisters pointed out in their comments - you'll surprise yourself and every other sister at the masjid when you realize you can't pray with your legs showing! HAHAH.. wear it between prayers...!

Street style - hijabified!

So I'm back, throwing more hijabi-fied street style your way! Here's how I created this outfit from the outfit that fashionista is wearing to our left.

I saw the trench first - Oh boyy I love longer jackets and coats.
--> Her's is more of a light olive green/gray but I didn't follow the outfit to the letter so I chose another neutral - biege!

Then I thought, her navy blue dress is to gray as.. _____ is to biege.. BROWN!
--> She's wearing a unique belt on the dress, but I decided let's just go with a unique dress and forget the belt.

Then.. turqouise is to navy as ___ is to brown... GOLD!
--> Shabaaam! and then a gold clutch was chosen!

Ohhh! Loving the pop of color in the shoes! Red, navy, grays... biege, brown, gold, ORANGE!

Then of course a hijabi doesn't wear tights like that so trousers it was, and for the final touch - sunglasses.

WHERE ARE THOSE WIDE LEGS?

So i'm alllwaaayyyss posting on them.. I am in love with them, so where am I finding these wide legs, and where can you get them? I have that all, right here in this post!

So the reason you're probably not finding wide legs in stores are two things;
1) You aren't looking in the right places
2) They are high fashion so stores that only sell "trendy" clothing probablywouldn't have them!

Myself, I prefer shopping at stores that don't sell things that are "trendy". I mean - brand names (because unless I am really into the item - brand names usuallymean an easy way out and in that light, they are terribly unfashionable). But I'm not banningthose "trendier stores" because not only do they fit into my budget but also the do have some really nice pieces, or plain tops.

SO we all know I'm in love with dresses (hence all 2o something dresses I posted on previously), and especially for the summer! We can't wear tiny little ones so why stick with trousers allll summer? What's breezier than a dress? Well, a skirt is a good choice too - but that's besides the matter.. heh

These are only four dresses from monsoon.co.uk so if you have that summer wedding to attend, a formal gathering, or maybe you're already on the look out for a graduation dress for next june - monsoon has a great selection to choose from.

I couldn't find the prices of the first three but the last one it 180 pounds, so the rest must be around that seeing as they're all around the same formality.

Muslim T.V shows....!!

Salaam Sisters! Alright so I heard about this Turkish show called; gumus and I got really excited because I thought it would be a hijabi fashionista soap.. but I soon found out that it was just my imagination and I got really dissappointed... OOHH and It was going to be soo GOOD too.. women in turkish hijab styles,,, wearing clothing by setrms and hijabs by aker.. :( This is the cast below. Dissappointing? I think so! I'm sure it's a good soap though.. I'm not interested anymore
BUT THEN! I remembered a show I had read about in my Muslim Girl Magazine called "Kalam Nawaem" - an arabic talk show meaning "sweet talk". Muslim Girl Magazine (I think it was) introduced it to its readers as an arabic version of The View. I LOVE THE VIEW! So I watched like half an episode (all I could find) on youtube with sami yusif on it.. or was it yusif islam? I ALWAYS mix those two up... NOOO it was sami yusif. My dad's a cat steven's fan. Here are a few pictures of the hosts.... LOOK! A hijabi! hah
The hijabi's name is "Muna Abusulayman" And I believe she is an ambassador as well.. :D Masha allah tabarak allah! -- and look how well dressed she is!

Her tunic here isn't goorgeeouus- as in, there isn't too much that stands out - but still, with a nice hijab, she wears it well!

Transition into seasons without breaking your bills...

CRASHBAMBOOM!...erm.. sorry mr. piggie... (oh wait, maybe a cow? lamb? would be better?), and you realize you just killed your piggie bank for a few quarters and cents (Allah knows I have!) .. then you get all depressed - too bad I won't be able to "work it" this season..

We all think that when a new season arrives, we have to buy toootaaallly new wardrobes, and when we know we're broke.. we just plain, break down.

GUESS WHAT SISTERS? Use that bit of money left over from your summer vacations, and shopping sprees etc. to buy a few accessories - scarves, must have items from an accessory store, a pair of boots .. or two, and maybe a few basic tops you can wear more than one way.

Here is how to change a plain outfit to fit the season's new trends;

1) Buy accessories in colors that fit the season's standards

2) Remember your hijab can completly change your outfit - and that's a good thing. Choose your hijabs wisely!

Pack Rat

SOoo seeing as it's august, and some of us are squeezing summer dry with that last vacation (and of course others just wish they could), I thought I'd show you a bit of hijabifashionista packing, and a few tips. p.s. this is based on a 5 day trip

So when I go anywhere - no matter how long, I try to be pretty organized with my packing. Take camp for instance, I always open all my drawers and look through my closet and I write down lists of outfits I would want to take with me.

So what to pack?
Tunics for sure.. weather is just getting warmer, and those light, gorgeous materials are just perrrfect! Maybe a caftan! Don't forget those gorgeous tanks!

Also, white trousers if you own them, and a pair of jeans and another default pair.

If you're the kind of hijabi who needs a million hijabs - one for each outfit, then take a whole bunch - they don't take a lot of room anyway! But if you have a small case, then look at your tunics - can you wear a white one with multiple? A black one? Then take those two. Make sure you have one in a bright color so your hijabs aren't too simple everyday of the vacation! You want to wow yourself years later when you look back at those pictures, don't you?

Of course, long sleeved tops - but you don't need many, maybe one and a sleeves, or two and sleeves. Sleeves are great because they're easy to put on, and they're great for the summer weather - you don't want to wear 2 tops everyday!

pajamas and lounge wear - if that's a caftan - so be it, if it's a hoodie - take only one, and take only one pair of pajamas - you don't need a diff one for every night!

Last but not least - accessories like bangles, belts, watches, a bag, your wallet, your makeup bag, SUNGLASSES (make 'em BIG) and whatever else you might need!

Hijabifashionista packing tips:
-Make sure when you're creating outfits, use one piece in more than one outfit! That ='s more outfits, more room in your case!
-I ALWAYS add extra accessories because they can undoubtably change any outfit.

I love packing, if you never did - i think now you might!

Fall/winter trend update!

So far, we've covered taking inspiration from art, from fashion photos, advertisements, and putting our own spin on particular trends - however, what I find surprising is that I haven't yet covered following haute couture - hot off the runway (seeing as I'm always updating myself)! So the most recent fashion shows have been showing the latest trends for fall/winter and fall ready to wear. SOOOO what's this have to do with you? Well, we're going to profile what's new for fall so that you're one step ahead of the game. Also, what's the harm seeing as stores are already stocking up on the latest fall fashions? Atleast now you'll know what to buy, and how to wear it hijabi style...

TUNICS--

So the first picture from micheal kors collection, and the second is burbery porsum (you can always tell when it's burbery) and I posted it first because it shows off what's hot for fall - and girls you will be happy when I tell you that fall fashion is basically defined with one word - TUNICS!

This first pic above, as you can see, the model is wearing grey head to toe - (erm, should I say neck to toe). DON"T DO THIS, as a hijabi you can't go one color head to toe - especially since you wear a hijab (duhh) and i would bet you would wear a gray hijab as well. IF you are really into that, then i would suggest adding some off color accessories - put in a black belt (or bright pink, it doesn't really matter), or wear darker pants. One way to spice up a tunic (and I've posted on this before) is a thin belt!
The outfit by Burbery can teach us something different than kors' - big goddy necklaces and jewlery! Especially when going with a plain top, unless you're wearing your most sparkly hijab, go with a simple hijab and a huge charm on your necklace! ---Long necklace by the way.

hijabifashionista tip- what's not in for fall (unlike spring/summer and what we're wearing now) are mini dresses, fall is strictly for tunics and that means they shouldn't be any lower than midthigh (at a maximum). If you're going beyond that, you're sporting a mini dress, and don't be surprised if a fellow fashionista tells you that you're SO LAST SEASON!

So three more things hot for fall/winter - fringing, patterns, and furs!

We learn from the outfit by Gucci, patterns are still in (just like they were for the summer - remember previous posts) But they may not be as big and bold, rather more folky patterns in deeper colors than the summer's brights.
Gualtier shows us that fur is in, and even so much as to wear a whole coat of it! For me, I do wear leather, but for some reason it wouldn't feel right to wear a real fur coat.. what do you sisters think of the matter?
And finally armani NEVER fails to dissappoint me with the deep make up and a dress I will probably never wear, but always admire. Tassels, a little fringy grunge is again in for fall - one of my favorite looks!

If it wasn't haraam, I would bet all of you will make some good choices while shopping for the fall season!
